1. Who we are
ScholarshipSpace is an independent scholarship database that publishes free information about scholarships, fellowships, and educational funding opportunities worldwide. The Site is operated from the United States. For all privacy-related inquiries, email us.
2. Information We Collect
We collect three main categories of information:
a) Information you provide directly
If you email us, leave a comment, or submit any form on the Site, we collect the information you choose to share, typically your name, email address, and the content of your message.
b) Member account information
You can create a free account. When you do, we collect your name, a public handle, your email address, and a password, which we store only as a secure hash. We also record when you accepted this Policy.
While you use your account, we store the scholarships you shortlist, the private notes you add, the friends you tag, the questions and replies you post, and your notifications.
Your handle and the questions and replies you post are public. Your email address, shortlist, and private notes are visible only to you and to our administrators. Please keep phone numbers, email addresses, and other contact details out of your posts. Our filter removes some of them.
c) Information collected automatically
When you visit the Site, our servers and third-party tools may automatically collect:
- Technical data: your IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, and referring website.
- Usage data: pages you view, time spent on pages, links clicked, and how you arrived at the Site.
- Cookies and similar tracking technologies (see Section 4).
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate and maintain the Site, including security and fraud prevention.
- Create and run your account, show your shortlist and notifications, and email you verification and password reset codes. Our only emails to you are for account security. Tag and reply notifications appear inside your account.
- Limit repeated sign-up and login attempts by using your IP address briefly.
- Understand how visitors use the Site so we can improve content, design, and performance.
- Respond to inquiries you send us by email.
- Display relevant advertisements through third-party ad networks (see Section 5).
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.
4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We and our third-party partners use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to collect information about how you interact with the Site. Cookies are small text files stored on your device that help websites remember information about your visit.
Types of cookies used on this Site:
- Essential cookies: required for the Site to function properly (for example security and page loading). If you sign in, these include the cookies that keep you signed in and protect your account. A session ends after 2 hours of inactivity and always within 24 hours. If you choose “Remember me”, it ends after 7 days of inactivity and always within 14 days.
- Analytics cookies: collected via Google Analytics to help us understand site traffic patterns.
- Advertising cookies: used by Google AdSense and other ad networks to display relevant ads.
- Performance cookies: used by our caching server to speed up page delivery.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies, but doing so may affect how the Site works. You can also opt out of personalised advertising at My Ads Center.
5. Third-Party Services and Advertising
We work with reputable third-party services to operate the Site. These third parties may collect, use, and share information according to their own privacy policies:
- Google AdSense displays advertisements on our Site. Google uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your previous visits to our Site and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at My Ads Center. Read Google’s privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Google Analytics helps us understand how visitors use the Site by collecting anonymised traffic data. You can opt out by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
- Google Search Console provides aggregated data about how the Site appears in Google search results.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that sign-up and password reset forms are used by people. It receives your IP address and browser signals for this purpose.
- Brevo is our email service. It delivers the verification and password reset codes we send to your email address.
- Our web hosting provider processes server-level data (for example IP addresses in server logs).
- WordPress and other software providers may process limited data necessary for the Site to function.
6. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information.
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom: Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict processing of, object to processing of, and port your personal information. You also have the right to withdraw consent at any time.
For users in California (USA): Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and CPRA, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion of your information, opt out of any “sale” or “sharing” of personal information, and not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
For members: You can download your data and permanently delete your account yourself in My Space, under Settings. Deleting your account removes your shortlist, notes, tags, notifications, and your questions and replies. If a question already has replies, it stays in the thread marked as deleted, with your name and text removed, so the conversation still makes sense.
For all other users: You may have similar rights under your local data protection laws. To exercise any of these rights, email us. We will respond within 30 days.
7. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as needed to provide the services described in this Policy or as required by law. Server logs are typically retained for 30 to 90 days. Email correspondence is retained as needed to respond to and follow up on your inquiry. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics’s standard 14-month default.
For members, accounts that are never verified are deleted after 3 days, and notifications are deleted after 90 days. All other account data is kept until you delete your account. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time in My Space (except your username). Our administrators can also see and edit that information.
8. Children’s Privacy
ScholarshipSpace is intended for users aged 16 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it. Many scholarships we list have minimum age requirements above 16; we recommend that minors use the Site under parental supervision.
9. International Data Transfers
Our hosting infrastructure is located in the United Kingdom, and our third-party service providers (such as Google, Cloudflare, and Brevo) operate globally. By using the Site, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than the one where you reside. We rely on standard contractual safeguards and our third-party providers’ compliance frameworks to protect such transfers.
10. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we collect, including HTTPS encryption, secure hosting, and limited internal access. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. External Links
Our scholarship listings link extensively to external websites (official scholarship pages, awarding body websites, application portals). When you click these links, you leave our Site and are subject to the privacy practices of those websites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy policies of third-party sites we link to.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. When we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will also be announced on the Site. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically.
