Wellcome Early-Career Awards
Open
Overview
The Wellcome Early-Career Awards fund postdoctoral researchers to build an independent research career, paying your salary and up to £400,000 for research expenses, usually over five years. The research can be in any discipline if it has the potential to improve human life, health and wellbeing. Applications are accepted at any time, and new location rules start on 29 October 2026. For the full list of benefits, see what the scholarship covers.
What to know before applying
You need a PhD with the viva passed, or at least four years of equivalent research experience if you have no PhD. You should have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience at submission, with allowance for part-time work and career breaks. You must spend at least 80% of your research time on the project, and co-applicants and collaborators are not accepted. You can hold one of these awards only, and renewals are not offered.
Your application is made through an administering organisation, which must be a not-for-profit such as a university, research institute or healthcare organisation, and you need a sponsor in an established post there. Your organisation approves and submits the form on the Wellcome Funding platform. Until 28 October 2026, organisations can be in the UK, the Republic of Ireland or a low- or middle-income country, excluding India and mainland China. From 29 October 2026, Wellcome accepts only lead applicants based at organisations in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current rules.
Selection runs through shortlisting, written expert review, an interview in London (remote participation is possible) and a final panel decision. For other postdoctoral options, see the Royal Society Newton Fellowship, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and more scholarships in the UK.
Timeline notes
Wellcome states there are no deadlines for this scheme. Shortlisting meets three times a year (February, June and September) and interviews take place three times a year (May, September and January). The scheme page also shows a closed-round block with an October 2026 deadline and interviews on 12 to 14 January 2027, so confirm timing with Wellcome before you plan around a date.
